What Batman comic should I start reading at?

6

I’m not a very avid comic reader, so I’m going to ask you guys a VERY broad question…. I’ve recently became interested in the DC comic book character Batman, via his latest video game (Arkham Asylum). And I wanted to know where should I start reading Batman comics that tie in with the MAIN DC storyline leading to his death. So, what comic should I start reading?

then you need to read final crisis

Well Final Crisis if you want to read his death …. but that book was terrible.

You should get Battle for the Cowl and then Batman & Robin. XD

There are some amazing classic Batman stories that you should be aware of.

First and foremost, The Long Halloween, written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale. Truly great read. Jeph Loeb also wrote the Hush story arc, with art by Jim Lee. Those issues (#608-619) are collected in trades, and relatively easy to find.

A lot of people feel differently about Frank Miller, but his Year One and The Dark Knight Returns stories are fantastic.

As for the main DC story line: all the stuff leading up to and including his death was a little lame. Even the Battle for the Cowl stories were kind of boring. But if you pick up the series after Bruce Wayne is dead (the story following his death really gets going at #682), all you need to know is this: Bruce Wayne, the original Batman is dead. Dick Grayson, the original Robin, is Batman now. Robin is Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s son with Talia al Ghul (a fairly recently created character).

As mentioned earlier, Batman and Robin is also a good series to read, though I personally think Grant Morrison is not as good a writer as he used to be.

Agree with JS. Batman and Robin by Frank Miller was good…also go with Millers Year One and The Long Halloween by Tim Sale.

People with Always recommend Long Halloween and Dark Victory, but quite frankly I find that “The Last Arkham” was a much better read.

Introduces Zsasz, and Dr. Arkham, and the inner workings of Arkham itself.

I started with comics from the 80s, because that’s when they all started connecting to eachother, crossing over, & generally being more serious.

Don’t jump into Crisis or BftC. You’ll have to backtrack to make sence of it. You’ll be backtracking a lot. Plus, you’re comming from the new game. You want to read about Bruce-Wayne-Batman, not Dick Grayson Batman. Two completely different guys. Then there are all the related titles, but not all of them are (or remain) in continuity (Like most of Legends of the Dark Knight).

You’ll need to do a little research. Start here: http://www.comicvine.com/batman/29-1699/issues-cover/

Someone asked a similar question & I put a little research into it. It’s a good idea of exact issues to start on. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvRAtOi5Iumci0no.R1Vzrrty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091010101733AAe6m2e&show=7#profile-info-55dbdKLIaa

There’s also a couple of graphic novels sold in normal book stores you might want to check out, like “Arkham Asylum:A Serious House on Serious Earth,” “Joker’s Asylum,” “Arkham Asylum:Tales of Madness,” & “Arkham Asylum:Living Hell.”
